Home Refresh: 5 Top Tips From an Architect

Running an architectural practice, there have been countless times where homeowners are looking to update and refresh their living spaces. Whether it's modernizing an outdated kitchen, creating a more open floor plan, or simply adding a fresh coat of paint, there are plenty of easy and affordable ways to revitalize your home. Here are five of my top tips:

  1. Rethink your floor plan
One of the most impactful ways to refresh a home is to re-evaluate the floor plan. Look for ways to open up the space, improve flow, and create a more functional layout. This could mean removing a non-load-bearing wall to create an open concept living area, converting a formal dining room into a home office, or reimagining the kitchen to make it the true heart of the home.

When considering floor plan changes, think about how you and your family actually use the space on a daily basis. Where are the pain points or areas that feel cramped or underutilized? Solving those functional issues can make a world of difference.

  1. Enhance your entryway
Your entryway is the first impression guests have of your home, so it's a great place to focus your refresh efforts. Even small changes like new lighting, a bold paint colour, updated hardware, or a stylish console table can elevate the space.

Consider ways to make the entryway more functional too. Add storage for coats, shoes, and other daily items. Create a designated spot for keys, mail, and other clutter. A well-designed entryway sets the tone for the rest of your home.

  1. Modernize the kitchen
The kitchen is often the heart of the home, so it's a smart investment when refreshing your space. Start by assessing the big-ticket items - the cabinets, countertops, and appliances. Updating these elements can dramatically change the look and feel of the kitchen.

If a full kitchen renovation isn't in the budget, focus on smaller, more affordable updates. Swap out hardware, add a tile backsplash, or install new lighting fixtures. Even something as simple as a fresh coat of paint on the cabinets can make a big difference.

  1. Bring in natural light
Increasing the amount of natural light in your home is an easy way to make it feel brighter, airier, and more inviting. Consider adding or enlarging windows, installing skylights, or even removing solid walls in favour of glass.

In rooms that lack windows, get creative with mirrors, which can bounce light around and create the illusion of more openness. Sheer window treatments can also help maximize natural light.

  1. Update your outdoor spaces
Don't forget about the exterior of your home when planning a refresh. Your outdoor living areas are an extension of your indoor spaces, so they deserve just as much attention.

Spruce up your front yard with new landscaping, a fresh coat of paint on the front door, or an inviting porch seating area. In the backyard, focus on creating usable, comfortable spaces for entertaining and relaxing. Add a pergola, update patio furniture, or install an outdoor kitchen.

Making your home feel fresh and new doesn't have to be a massive undertaking. With a little creativity and these five tips, you can breathe new life into your living spaces.
